You are driving long, and all of a sudden, the battery light illuminates on your dashboard. This can be your vehicle’s engine control unit telling you that the alternator is going bad. Unfortunately, there is no way to repair the alternator. When it goes bad, it needs to be replaced. Aside from the battery warning light, here are other signs that your alternator is malfunctioning.
Accessory Issues
The alternator is the primary power source of your automobile. It generates voltage up to 14.5 volts to power your accessories and do many other things. Consequently, if the alternator is not generating power, your power accessories may fail. This includes things like your radio and navigation system.
Battery Issues
The alternator also provides power to the battery so it never discharges completely. If the alternator is not providing power to the battery, it will discharge and go dead. Unfortunately, even if you jump-start your automobile, the battery will not maintain the charge because the alternator is not providing power.
Electrical Issues
The alternator can cause electrical issues in your automobile if it is producing too much power. It can cause power surges that will blow out fuses, and it can overheat the electrical system. If you smell hot electricity or have problems with your fuses, it’s possible that you need a new alternator.
Headlight Issues
You may also notice that it is difficult to see when you are driving at night. The headlights are not as bright as they used to be. You are also having problems reading the dashboard because the dashboard light is dim. Unfortunately, this, too, is a sign that the alternator is going bad and not producing enough electricity.
Spark Plug Issues
The alternator also produces electricity for your vehicle’s spark plugs. You need the plugs to fire in the correct order in order for engine combustion to be efficient. If the alternator is failing to power the spark plugs, they may misfire or not fire at all and your engine will stall.
Strange Noises
Finally, you might hear odd noises coming from the engine if the alternator is going bad. Specifically, the alternator can grind or squeal if it is having problems. As we said, these noises will come from the engine because this is where the alternator is located.
