Transmission fluid is not one of those fluids that most people think about. One reason why is the fluid is difficult to check on your own; the dipstick is located underneath your automobile. Generally, the first sign of transmission fluid problems is leaking fluid underneath your car or transmission problems. Demore’s Automotive can figure out what your fluid is trying to tell you.
Leaks or Puddles
If you’ve got a puddle under the center of your car, it might be fluid. The leak might be in the transmission pan or in the fluid lines among other issues. You can continue to drive your car if it’s leaking fluid, but the more fluid you lose the more you damage the transmission. It’s best to have someone take a look and repair the leak, especially if the leak is the only problem. Quick fix!
Color of the Fluid
Double-check the color of the fluid on your garage floor. If it is bright red, that is a good sign. It should be clear and bright red, indicating that the fluid is clean and viscous. As your fluid gets older, it picks up dirt and turns brownish. If the fluid is black or watery pink, these are bad signs. Black transmission fluid is oxidized and should be changed right away. Pink fluid is diluted by engine coolant.
Time Since Your Last Flush and Fill
How long has it been since your transmission fluid was last checked or flushed and filled? Your car’s owner’s manual should have information for you about when you should ideally get that done. Most manufacturers recommend this service around 30,000 to 50,000 miles. If you can’t remember the last time the fluid was checked, schedule an appointment for a transmission inspection to play it safe.
The Transmission Is Sending You Other Messages
You might notice other signs that your transmission is not okay, as well. If you smell a burnt smell, that could be transmission fluid leaking onto other hot parts or it may be the pump inside the transmission failing. If you feel or hear the gears slipping, that’s also a sign that there’s something going on with your car’s transmission. Your car may even display a check engine light for transmission problems.
