Do I Need to Replace My Vehicle’s Exhaust System?

There may come a point when you will need to replace your vehicle’s exhaust system if it is an older automobile. Demore’s Automotive can inspect your exhaust system and recommend any necessary repairs or replacement if you are having any of the problems listed below. Rarely is an exhaust system need to be replaced. Usually, the system can be repaired.

Too Much Engine Noise

For example, you do not need to replace the exhaust system if the engine is making too much noise. Chances are, the problem is that you have a hole in the muffler. Replacing the muffler will resolve the problem, so, in essence, we are just partially rebuilding the exhaust system. It’s important to have a noisy muffler replaced as soon as possible to avoid being the recipient of a moving violation.

Decreased Engine Power

Another sign that your exhaust system needs to be repaired is if you have a decrease in your engine’s ability to produce power. This usually points to clogs or leaks in the exhaust system. We can find out where your exhaust system is clogged or leaking and replace those parts.

Reduction in Fuel Economy

Unfortunately, this decrease in engine power will reduce your vehicle’s fuel economy. Consequently, you want to have your exhaust system repaired as soon as possible so that you can restore your engine’s performance. You will only get excellent gas mileage when the engine is running efficiently, and it cannot run inefficiently if the exhaust system is clogged or leaking.

Engine Bay Burning Odors

You may also detect burning odors coming from the engine. In this case, you likely have a leaking exhaust manifold gasket that is releasing hot exhaust into the engine. Unfortunately, the exhaust is so hot that it can melt nearby rubber or plastic parts.

Damage to the Tailpipe

You may also need to have your tailpipe replaced if it is damaged. It’s easy for the tailpipe to get damaged because of where it is located. Damage to tailpipes can consist of dents, corrosion, or holes in the pipes. The tailpipe must be replaced if it is damaged.

Gasoline/Diesel Fuel Odors

Finally, your exhaust system is either clogged or leaking if you can smell gasoline or diesel fuel odors inside your automobile. We recommend that you have your vehicle towed to our shop rather than driving it to avoid the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.
