Are Diagnostic Tests Really Necessary?

Yes, in many cases diagnostic tests are really necessary. For example, the check engine light covers numerous problems with your vehicle that range from sensor issues to transmission problems. We do not know the exact reason why the check engine light turned on. As such, we must run a diagnostic test to receive the error code sent to your vehicle’s main computer chip. This tells us the exact problem. Let’s talk more about this below.

Your Vehicle’s Computer System

Your car, truck, or utility vehicle is equipped with a main computer chip that is called the engine control unit or engine control module. People often abbreviate their names by saying the ECU or the ECM. The ECU is in charge of many vehicle functions, including firing the spark plugs and balancing the air and fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. It is also the recipient of data from various system sensors.

Your automobile has sensors in all of the systems to make sure everything is okay while you are driving the vehicle. The sensors talk to the ECU when you first fire up your automobile and while it is running. You may have noticed that all of the lights turn on on the dashboard when you first ignite the engine. This is a sign that the system sensors are sending data to the engine control unit.

As the unit receives this data, it turns off the associated warning light or leaves it on if there is a problem that it cannot resolve. It will also turn on dashboard warning lights while you are driving if something goes wrong and, again, it cannot resolve the problem itself. As we mentioned above, if the problem does not have its own warning light, the engine control unit will turn on the check engine light.

The Purpose of the Diagnostic Test

When you bring your vehicle to our shop, we will run a diagnostic test so we can retrieve all of the error codes that the engine control unit received from the system sensors. These codes point us to each problem individually. This gives us the opportunity to understand what it will take to repair your automobile in a very short time. This saves you money on labor fees.

The diagnostic test also provides us with crucial information about problems that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. As such, we recommend you have a diagnostic test run on a regular basis to make sure there is nothing wrong with your vehicle. Call us today to schedule an appointment.
